Wild dogs, scientifically known as African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus), are remarkably social creatures. They typically form packs comprising anywhere from 2 to over 20 adult individuals, along with their dependent young. While this is the standard range, it’s worth noting that packs exceeding 40 members have been observed, albeit infrequently. However, these larger packs tend to be short-lived, as they often splinter into smaller, more manageable groups. The population of the African wild dog, also known as the painted wolf, is estimated to be around 6,600 adults, which includes approximately 1,400 mature individuals. These wild dogs are dispersed across 39 subpopulations. Unfortunately, their existence is under threat due to factors such as habitat fragmentation, human persecution, and susceptibility to disease outbreaks. These challenges collectively pose a significant risk to the survival of this species in the wild.
